Abstract

The valve has a housing (2) having two axially spaced-apart ring seals (11, 12), an inlet (7) laterally into the space between the seals, and an outlet (10) through one (12) of the seals. The closure member (1) has a smooth cylindrical surface by which to extend through the other seal and, when open, extends short of the outlet seal, the fluid pressure force tending to urge the member axially into the fully open position being balanced by seal friction. To close the valve, the member is moved to engage the outlet seal when the fluid pressure can only act radially on the member and so becomes fully self-balancing.
