Abstract

893,403. Jointing by forging; making wire ropes. SOC. DES GRANDS TRAVAUX DE MARSEILLE. July 18, 1960 [July 21, 1959], No. 24986/60. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXV] An anchoring sleeve 2 is secured to a cable 1 or a bar by cold drawing through a die 5. The sleeve is held against a piston-rod 7 whose piston 8 operates in an hydraulic cylinder 6 coupled through housing 3 with the die 5. When hydraulic fluid is admitted to the right of piston 8 the die 5 is cold drawn over the sleeve 2 to contract it on to the cable 1, Fig. 2 (not shown). Finally, the sleeve is threaded externally to receive an anchoring nut 9, Fig. 4. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, the cable 1 is tensioned before the sleeve 2 is secured thereon, by a clamp 15 carried by a piston 13, 14 working in an hydraulic cylinder 11. The latter carries a piston 16 working in a further hydraulic cylinder 17 carrying the die 18. In operation the sleeve 2 is supported against a plate 20. Hydraulic fluid is admitted to cylinder 11 causing clamp 15 to tension the cable, and then fluid is admitted to cylinder 17 whereby die 18 is drawn over the sleeve 2. When a sleeve is to be secured to a bar, a coil of high-duty steel 22, Fig. 6 (not shown), is first interposed between the bar and the sleeve and is pressed into their surfaces during the cold drawing.
