Abstract

A jack for tensioning reinforcing wires, rods or cables comprises a double-acting piston 6 working in a pressure chamber 1 of an annular cylinder disposed around the reinforcing wire, rod or cable (not shown), said chamber having ports 12 and 13, Fig. 3 (not shown), for supplying fluid to the respective sides of the piston. In operation the reinforcing element is passed through the core 2 of the cylinder and through conical elements 35 of a gripping device 33. Fluid is then fed under pressure through port 12 to the inside face of the piston, said piston being moved upwards to initially abut the annular piston-rod against said gripping device. Further extension of the piston tensions the wire as required, calibrations on the piston-rod indicating the degree of tensioning applied. Fluid is then fed through a port 32 into a second annular chamber 16, formed at the front end of the cylinder, to urge an annular piston 17 therein against a tubular element 28 which is adapted to urge a similar gripping device (not shown) into a mould to maintain the tensioned wire in the stressed condition. U- shaped rings 10, 11, 30 and 31 seal the respective pistons in their pressure chambers, the rings on the inner face of piston 6 being retained in place by a perforated plate 45.
