Abstract
748,969. Anchor-bolts; washers. WING- FOOT CORPORATION. Sept. 15, 1953 [March 19, 1953], No. 25441/53. Class 89 (1). [Also in Group XIX] A washer 12, for use in determining the tension in a bolt, e.g. a mine-roof supporting - bolt 10, comprises plates 14, 15 with a layer of rubber or the like 16 therebetween and bonded, e.g. by vulcanizing, thereto. Plate 14 is larger than, and plate 15 the same diameter as, the rubber layer, and a sleeve 17 is provided in the bore of the plate 14 and layer 16, and may be welded to plate 15. In use, the rubber is compressed as nut 13 is tightened, and deforms as shown, the increase in diameter being a measure of the tension in the bolt. A chart (Fig. 4, not shown), has a curve 19 plotted for the characteristics of the rubber used, increases in diameter being read off directly in terms of bolt tension. The bolt 10 has a split end 10a to be driven against a wedge 11 in a bore in the mine roof to spread the end into the wall of the bore. A mine roof may be supported by a number of such bolts, some or all being fitted with washers 12.
