Abstract

1340406 Metal-working presses MASCHINEN FABRIK WEINGARTEN AG 19 April 1971 [19 Feb 1970 (2)] 22244/71 Heading B3H [Also in Division B5] In a metal working press having a ram 1 guided between uprights 2 and 2a, the weight of the ram together with that of an upper tool 14 secured thereto is counter-balanced by compressed air pressure supplied to cylinders 13. The ram 1 is secured to the rod 5 of a piston 12 guided in the cylinder 13 through a suspension pin 11. The press is driven by an arrangement comprising a motor 6, flywheel and gear transmission, eccentric wheel 7, connecting rod 8, and guided plunger 9 and thrust spindle 10. A measuring device 15 on the spindle, e.g. in the form of a strain gauge measuring compression or tension, is provided to determine when the balance point is reached, signals from the device being used to control the supply or removal of compressed air to/from the cylinder 13 through a line 18. The line 18 connects the cylinder with a vessel 19; compressed air is supplied to or removed from the vessel 19 by suitable operation of inlet and outlet valves 23, 25. The valves 23, 25 are connected to an adjuster device 17 in turn connected to the measuring device 15. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2) measurement of the drive motor current is used to adjust the compressed air pressure in each cylinder (13) to balance the weight of the ram and tool.
