Abstract
An emulsion of cis-1,4 polyisoprene is prepared by stirring a solution of synthetic polyisoprene in an inert hydrocarbon liquid into water in the presence of an emulsifier. The polyisoprene has more than 85% of cis-1,4 units. The inert liquid may be gasoline or pentane-1. The emulsifier may be a potassium or sodium salt of rosin acid, oleic, palmitic, stearic, lauric, myristic, arochidic or castor acid, a hydroxyamine of a long-chain fatty acid or p ester, tridecyl benzyl hydroxy ethyl imidazolinium chloride or stearyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride in a concentration between 0,25 and 10% by weight of the elastomer. An anti-foaming agent may be added. If the conditions are such that a water-in-oil emulsion is formed further surface active agents may be added to produce phase inversion. The emulsion may be turned into a latex by distilling off the solvent by heating.ALSO:A synthetic polyisoprene (with more than 85% of cis-1,4 units) in latex form is made into a foam according to the following recipe:- .Latex.100 .Sulphur.1-3 .Accelerator.1-5 .Antioxidant.0,5-2 This is matured at a temperature in excess of 45 degrees for at least 18 hours. To this mixture is added .Surface active agent.2-7 .Foam stabiliser.0,1-2 .Zinc oxide.1-7 .Gelling agent.0,2-2 and the froth is gelled and vulcanised. The accelerators specified are zinc diethyldithiocarbomate and zinc mercapto benzthiazole, the antioxidant may be a styrenated phenol, the surfactant may be potassium oleate, the foam stabiliser and thickener may be a mixture of carboxymethyl cellulose and trimene base. The geller may be sodium silicofluoride. Sodium hexametophosphate and potassium chloride may be added to improve the appearance of the foam.
