Abstract

332,525. Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., Chapman, W. H., Pounder, D. W., and Murphy, E. A. March 21, 1929. Latex, treating; spongy rubber. - Aqueous dispersions of rubber &c. which have been rendered capable of gelling on the application of heat, or in the cold after a definite and controllable time interval, are converted into a froth while still remaining reversible, and are subsequently caused to set to an irreversible spongy mass. A froth-forming substance such as soap or saponin is added e.g. to latex, and a froth is made by whipping, or blowing air through the mass. The gelling agent which may be added before or after the froth formation, should be such that it has little or no inhibiting or breaking-down effect on the froth. Suitable substances for use with ammonium oleate are sodium or potassium silico fluoride or ammonium persulphate. When heat is employed for gelling, it should be insufficient to break down the cell structure. Several examples are given, of which the following is typical:-A latex mix as described in Specification 303,545 consisting of 92 parts of rubber, 2.5 parts of sulphur, 0.5 parts of zinc diethyldithio carbamate, 5 parts of mineral oil, 0.3 parts of caustic potash, and 0.5 parts of oleic acid is concentrated as in Specification 290,313. 0.5 parts of ammonium oleate and 1.0 part of sodium silico fluoride are added and the whole is whipped, air being bubbled through if large cells are required. The foam is set cold in moulds or trays, and vulcanized for two hours at 95‹ C, boiled in water for 30 min., and dried. Specification 219,635 also is referred to.
