Abstract
An improved gas-producing composition in pelleted form, which evolves gas under the action of heat comprises a solid p gas-producing substance or mixture of substances together with a small proportion of a stabilizer consisting of a dehydrating agent, the stabilizer being an anhydrous substance capable of forming a hydrate, or a lower hydrate which has a tendency to form a higher hydrate at the temperature at which the composition is required to remain without decomposition. The gas-producing mixtures referred to are a mixture of ammonium chloride with sodium nitrite which produces nitrogen and a mixture of tartaric acid with sodium bicarbonate or ammonium carbonate which produces carbon dioxide. The stabilizers referred to are anhydrous sodium carbonate or sulphate. The pellets may be used for inflating rubber balls or the like, e.g. at temperatures of 100 DEG C. or over.
