Abstract

A binder for mixing with a coke or carbon aggregate to produce carbon electrodes consists of 25-90%, preferably 40-60%, by weight low temperature tar pitch and 75-10%, preferably 60-40%, by weight high temperature tar pitch. The binder is used in a proportion of 17-20% by weight of the green electrode mix. In an example petroleum coke was mixed with 18,5% by weight of a pitch consisting of equal parts of low- and high-temperature tar pitch.
