An arrangement for use in combination with an optical viewing instrument comprises a cover member mounted for displacement between a normal position where in the member protectively overlies the objective end of the instrument and a viewing position where in the member is moved aside to permit unimpeded viewing, means biasing the member to the normal position and means connected to the member and extending generally towards the eye piece end of the instrument and including a pusher element positioned and arranged for engagement by part of an observer's head or the observer's eye nearing the eye piece, for displacing said member to the viewing position. In the embodiment shown, a telescope 1 is mounted by a bracket 3 for viewing through an aperture 5 in an armour plated wall 2. An armour plated cover member 6 is connected on the one hand by way of a flexible element 7 to the wall 2 and on the other hand by way of a swivel 11 to a link 12 carrying at an end a pusher element 13 engageable with an observer's forehead and being biased by the weight of said member 6 and by a spring 16 towards a position corresponding to the closed or normal position of said member 6. The viewing position of the member 6 and the corresponding position of pusher 13 are shown in chain-line outline. In modifications, flexible element 7 may be replaced by a rigid pivot arm or arms, the spring 16 may be omitted, means for counter balancing some or all of the weight of the member 6 may be provided, the pusher element 13 may be arranged to engage other parts of the observer's head-for example his chin-or the pusher element may be constructed in the form of an eye cup for the eye piece 18.
