831,991. Ophthalmic instruments. GASSON, W. May 9, 1958 [Feb. 11, 1957], No. 4657/57. Class 97(1) An ophthalmic instrument for testing near phorias comprises a distance member with a locating device at the front end to engage the patient's face and a screen at the other end with a light source attached to it, and a scale marked on it for determining the position thereon of a line image produced by the light source and a lens device when supported in front of one of the patient's eyes. As shown a telescoping distance member 10 has at one end pads 12 for engaging the chin of a patient and is pivoted at 13 to a screen 15 provided with a diagonal scale 30, an aperture 22 and an object 29. Behind the aperture there is a battery operated lamp in a housing which may have a hood 27. The patient views a line image formed on the screen by the light source and a Maddox groove or a trial lens placed in front of one eye, said Maddox groove being rotatable about an axis at 45 degrees to the horizontal so that it can be turned from back to front and at the same time shifted through 90 degrees about the optical axis, thereby changing the line from a horizontal one to a vertical one. The hood 27 and the screen 15 can be removed so that the instrument can be used as an ophthalmoscope or a retinoscope.
