676,843. Ophthalmoscopes. ZEISS-OPTON OPTISCHE WERKE OBERKOCHEN GES. July 31, 1950 [Aug. 5, 1949], No. 19024/50. Class 97 (i). An ophthalmoscope includes a light source illuminating a diaphragm and an optical system for forming an image of the diaphragm on the fundus of the eye under examination, and an image of the source on the pupil of that eye, thereby preventing corneal reflections reaching the observer. As shown, light from the source 2 contained in a handle 1 detachable from the tube 3 carrying the apparatus, passes through a condenser 4 and illuminates a diaphragm 5 on a drum rotatable by a knob 12 to change the diaphragm. An image of the source is formed at 2<SP>1</SP> and an image of the diaphragm is formed by lenses 7 and 8 and lens surface 9<SP>1</SP> of reflector 9 in the eye 6 and is observed by light passing from the eye through openings 10 and 13, a rotatable lens battery 14 permitting the necessary observations to be made. The lens system 7 and 8 also images the source 2 in the pupil of the eye and may be pancratic, the lens 7 in its mounting 15 being moved by knob 11 to vary the size of the diaphragm image without changing its position. A colour filter absorbing red and blue light may be included in the system.
