Abstract
665,531. Sight-testing apparatus. KEELER OPTICAL PRODUCTS, Ltd., and KEELER, C. H. Sept. 21, 1950 [Sept. 21, 1949], No. 24275/49. Class 97 (i). In a hand opthalmascope comprising a handle carrying a source of light throwing a beam on to a mirror which deflects it into the patient's eye, some of the light reflected by the fundus of which is transmitted by or past the mirror to the observer's eye, an objective is provided fixed so that its back focal point is disposed upon the mirror, and a graticule is movable between the light source and the objective whereby an image of the graticule is focused upon the fundus of the patient's eye. As shown in Fig. 5, the arrangement is such that the movable graticule 40 is illuminated by parallel light 47 from a light source 13 and condenser 14 and an image of the graticule is formed on the retina 52 of the patient's eye by an objective 44, a mirror 18 and the lens of the patient's eye, the image being observed through an aperture in the mirror 18. The rear focal point of the objective 44, at which an image of the source 13 is focused, is located on the mirror 18 and coincides with the front focal point of the eye 51. The embodiment shown in Fig. 2 comprises a. tube 22 carrying the source 13 and also supporting a housing member 23 carrying the condenser 14 and slidably supporting a tube 27 having a. graticule 37 fixed to the upper end thereof. The tube slides in guides fixed to a member 15 carried by the housing which member supports the objective 44 and a housing 17 carrying the mirror 18. An aperture 16 in the member 15 permits viewing of the patient's eye and a system of lenses, not shown, may be moved before the aperture 16 by a knob 21. A second graticule 40 is carried by a cylindrical member 38 removably carried by the upper end of the tube 27 to permit of substitution of the graticules. The tube 27 is moved by a knob 31 sliding in a slot 32 in the tube 22 and carries a transparent scale 60 illuminated indirectly by the lamp 13 and viewed through a tube 62 against an index on a plate 65. The scale 60 is calibrated to give the power of spectacle lens necessary to correct the patient's vision when the graticule has been adjusted to bring its image focus on the retina. Specification 333,925, [Class 97 (i)], is referred to.
