Abstract

891,324. Variable capacitors. W.S. ELECTRONICS Ltd. Nov. 11, 1960 [Nov. 11, 1959], No. 38284/59. Class 37. A variable capacitor comprises three pairs of sets of vanes, one vane set 24, 25, 26 of each pair being movable relatively to the other fixed vane set 21, 22, 23 of the pair in interleaved relationship, and the three movable vane sets 24, 25, 26 are fixed relatively to one another and electrically connected by being mounted on a common spindle 5 of ceramic material which is metal coated so as to make the appropriate connections. One terminal of the capacitor is taken to vane set 22, the other to vane sets 21 and 23 connected together. Several such capacitors can be ganged together in the same assembly, as shown in Fig. 1, where they are shown mounted in a framework with end members 6 and 10 and plates 7, 8, 9 held together by rods. The fixed vanes are soldered into slots in channel-shaped tags (e.g. 16, 17, 18) mounted on a ceramic bar (Fig. 3, not shown), and external connections may be made to these tags. The use of the capacitor with an inductance as a tunable VHF circuit is shown in Fig. 4.
