Abstract
890,779. Tubular elements for sub-critical boilers. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. Dec. 21, 1960 [Dec. 28, 1959], No. 43907/60. Class 123(2) In order to assure nucleate boiling and delay breakdown to film boiling of the liquid flowing through the vapour generating tubes of a subcritical pressure boiler of the forced, or natural, circulation type each tube 10 is formed, internally, throughout its length, with a continuous helical groove 14 to define a helical rib 16 which provides fluid turbulance along the inner surface of the tube. The rib 14, having a helix slope angle of approximately 15 degrees, has inclined sides 16<SP>1</SP>. In a modification, Fig. 2, each tube is grooved to provide a pair of continuous ribs. The grooves and the ribs are proportioned so that where:- P=the distance between adjacent ribs measured longitudinally of the tube. H and W=the height and width respectively of a rib. L=the advance in one complete revolution of the helical path of a rib. D=the minor inside diameter of the tube. then- P falls within the range 10-25, and is preferably H between 12-20. W falls within the range 0À2-0À55, and is prefer- P ably between 0À3-0À4. L falls within the range 0À1-2À5, and is prefer- D ably between 0À1-1À5. H falls within the range 0À03-0À08, and is prefer- D ably between 0À04-0À065. The range of the valve S , where S =the length H parallel to the tube axis of the inclined side of a rib, advantageously is also within the range of 0-2À5 and is preferably between 0-1À5.
