Abstract

764,942. Forced flow steam boilers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Feb. 18, 1955 [Feb. 18, 1954], No. 4895/55. Class 123(2) In a forced flow steam boiler having radiantly heated steam generating tubes including at least two series-connected lengths through which the working medium flows respectively upwardly and downwardly, the upflow length is of larger internal diameter than the downflow length so that the flow velocity in the latter, where the steam bubbles tend to rise, is increased, the diameters of both lengths being such that the respective flow velocities are sufficient to prevent the formation of large steam bubbles which adhere to the tube wall and cause local overheating of the tube metal. In an example, the boiler furnace is lined with tubes having upflow and downflow limbs of bore diameters of 30-38 mm. and 25-32 mm. respectively. The end portions of the upflow limbs are swaged to the diameter of the downflow limbs, formed into return bends and welded to the ends of the downflow limbs. The upflow velocity in this tube system is about 10 metres per second whilst the downflow velocity is about 14.4 metres per second.
