Abstract
In a heat exchanger in which a hot gas flows in a duct 5 and heats a liquid flowing in a surrounding duct 4 by conduction through a wall 3, and in which the surface of the wall on the gas side is formed with fins 10a extending in the direction of gas flow, the gas passageway is gradually constricted in the direction of gas flow. As shown, a core 2a may be disposed in the gas passage and the constriction may be applied by tapering the core, the fins 10a being of uniform height. Alternatively the core may be cylindrical and the fins tapered (Fig. 1). In a further form which does not utilize a core (Fig. 4) the fins are tapered so as to increase in height in the direction of gas flow and opposing fins meet or nearly meet at a point (11) on the longitudinal axis of the heat exchanger. In this embodiment the gas duct may have a non- cylindrical shape in cross-section such as elliptical or polygonal.
