Abstract
1,004,291. Tubular heat exchangers. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. May 28, 1962 [May 29, 1961; June 6, 1961], No. 20410/62. Heading F4S. In a heat exchanger in which fluid flowing through parallel tubes is in heat exchange relationship with fluid flowing over the tubes in a direction generally parallel to the tube axes, deflector bodies having cross-sections which alternately increase and decrease along their axes are arranged amongst the tubes and spaced from them with their axes parallel to the tube axes, the lengths of increasing cross-sectional area of some of the deflector bodies being abreast of lengths of decreasing cross-sectional area of other deflector bodies. As shown, the deflector is hollow and surface 7 is generated by revolution about axis 9 which is in the direction of fluid flow varies periodically in diameter between a minimum as at planes 10 and a maximum as at planes 11. The lengths 12 between planes are about onefifth the axial length of lengths 13. The tubes may be helically grooved both internally and externally (see Fig. 1, not shown), or be formed externally with some form of extended surface area, e.g. small longitudinally extending fins or longitudinal serrations or grooves. The deflector bodies may have internal and external extended surface areas. In an embodiment the deflector bodies may be adapted to allow fluid to flow therethrough parallel with fluid flowing through the tubes. In an alternative embodiment a deflector body is arranged within each tube (Fig. 1, not shown). Figs. 3 to 7 (not shown), illustrate various arrangements of the tubes and deflectors.
