An electric resistance tester to identify resistance values within a range and particularly suitable for gauging moisture content of soil or timber, includes a source 4 of striking potential and a pair 3a, 3b, of parallel connected neon or other gas-discharge lamps, having individual associated series resistors 5a, 5b, and test prods 1, 2, in series, the lamps having different striking voltages lower than that of said potential source. To avoid the lower voltage lamp operating at a reduced intensity, where higher resistances are being tested, a shunt resistor across the lamp may be included. To identify resistance values as lying within a particular one of two or more ranges one or more further lamps with individual series resistors in parallel with the pair of lamps, and having higher striking voltages, may be included.
