561,523. Locating faults. LOVE, A. Nov. 5, 1942, No. 15597. [Class 37] Testing apparatus for locating line faults in cables comprises a potentiometer having an adjustable contact arm or its equivalent that is movable relatively to a scale calibrated directly in units of length. A twincore cable to be tested has one wire 1 connected between terminals 3, 5 and the other wire 2, in which the fault 16 occurs, connected to' terminal 4. Across the terminals 3, 5 are connected in series a battery 6 and lamp 7. One end of a potentiometer resistance 11 is connected through a two-way switch 17 to either of the terminals 4, 5. The contact arm 18 of the potentiometer is connected through a galvanometer 10 and key 9 to the terminal 3. Potential is applied to the potentiometer from a battery 13 controlled by a switch 14 and shunted by a signal lamp 15, a rheostat 12 serving for adjustment. With the switch 17 on its left-hand contact the arm 18 is set to the length L of the conductor 1 on a scale 19 and the rheostat 12 is adjusted to give balance on the galvanometer 10. The switch 17 is then changed to the right-hand position and the potentiometer 11 adjusted to restore balance. The length'D to the fault is then indicated on the scale 19, which may be graduated in units of length or in percentages of the total length L. Alternatively, the contact arm 18 mav be connected to the switch 17 and the end of the potentiometer resistance to the galvanometer 10. A fault to earth may be similarly located.
