Abstract

1,178,231. Locating faults in cables. POSTMASTER GENERAL. Jan. 16, 1967 [Feb.11, 1966], No.6159/66. Heading G1U. The resistive position of a fault F, Fig. 5, in a cable AB is found by connecting the cable in a bridge of which one arm includes a calibrated variable resistance R5 and the portion AF of the cable, and a second arm comprises the portion FB of the faulty cable and a length CD of "good" cable, the other arm of the bridge comprising resistance arrangements as shown. The bridge is first balanced with switch SB in position 4 and is then unbalanced by switching SB to position 5 whereby the resistance of arm DG is charged. The value of R5 required to rebalance the bridge gives the resistance X of portion AF of cable AB. The location of the fault is then calculated knowing the resistance/unit length of the cable. With switch SA, Fig.1, in position 1 and SB in any position, a circuit is obtained Fig. 2 (not shown) which is used to calibrate the meter M2. With switch SA in position 2 and SB in any position a circuit is obtained Fig. 3 (not shown) which is used to measure the insulation resistance between one conductor connected to the "Line" terminal and another connected to the "Earth" terminal. A Wheatstone bridge Fig. 4 (not shown) used to measure the resistance of a conductor connected between the "Line" and "Return" terminals is obtained by placing switch SA in position 3 and SB in any one of its first three positions. Another bridge Fig. 7 (not shown) is obtained by placing switch SA in position 5 and SB in position 4, this bridge being used to locate broken conductor faults. One arm of the bridge comprises the capacitance to earth of the broken conductor from one of its ends to the fault, a second arm comprises the capacitance to earth of the remainder of the faulty conductor plus a length of "good" conductor and the other arms comprise resistance arrangements, the bridge being supplied by an oscillator OSC.
