Abstract
610,282. Resistance measurements. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., BARSDORF, L. W., and ORCHARD, F. C. April 4, 1946, No. 10430. [Class 37] A Wheatsone bridge has three resistors arranged in three arms, a check switch for connecting a known resistance in the fourth arm and a test switch for connecting in this arm test terminals between which the resistance to be tested can be connected. The bridge shown is particularly suitable for testing the resistance of earth continuity conductors of installation, including metal conduit, metalsheathed cable, &c., the resistance between any point of which and the earth electrode may not exceed 1 ohm. Three resistors 1, 2, 3 of 0.6 ohms, each are connected in three arms of a Wheatstone bridge, a galvanometer 4 being connected in diagonal A, B and a battery 5 being connected across the diagonal C, D through the contacts 6 of a push-button check switch 7 or the contacts 9 of a push-button test switch 8. A resistor 12 of 1.5 ohms is connected between points A, C and test clips 16 are connected by leads 15 and terminals 13, 14 to points A, E. A standard resistor 11 of 1 ohm is connected between the points E, C. The check switch 7 is closed and the test clips 16 are connected together, whereby the resistor 11 in series with the test leads 15 is connected in parallel with the resistor 12. All four arms have then the same resistance and the bridge should be balanced. The check switch 7 is opened, the test clips 16 are connected to the resistor under test, and the test switch 8 is closed. The standard resistance 11 is thereby short circuited through the switch contacts 9, 10 and the resistor under test is connected in parallel with the resistor 12. If the resistor under test has the same value as the standard resistor 11 the bridge is balanced. Deflection of the galvanometer 4 indicates a value above or below the standard. A trimming resistor 17 may be connected between the resistors 1, 12 by which the bridge may be adjusted to compensate for unbalance due to the resistance of the leads 15 &c.
