646,392. Directing, indicating, and locating faults ; capacitance and resistance measurements. GREENE, T. Nov. 29, 1947, No. 31624. [Class 37] Relates particularly to a system for locating faults in twin cables by connecting one cable 12 to a potentiometer 16 and forming a bridge by connecting the other cable 11 to a variable tapping 20, on the potentiometer 16 so that the location of a short circuit 10, or a break is indicated by the position of the tapping 20 at balance. According to the invention, the potentiometer 16 is associated with a scale holder 23 marked with a plurality of linear scales, and the length of the potentiometer is variable by adjusting contact 18 so that, e.g. the scale appropriate to the length of cable can be selected, e.g. by rotation of the holder, and the tapping 18 adjusted so that its indicator 21 lies on the selected scale at a marking corresponding to the length of the cable. As shown in Fig. 3, the scales 24, 25, 26, &c have the same zero, and the markings on each scale corresponding to the maximum of the preceding scale lie on a straight line 27. Where one cable is broken, the bridge indicates the ratio of the total capacities between the two broken lengths and the unbroken cable, Fig. 2 (not shown). The invention is applicable generally to measuring resistance or capacitance.
