[Class 39(iii)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] To measure the conductor temperature in a multicore cable under working conditions, the temperature of the filler at the centre of the cable is measured by a pair of wires embedded therein, and the small temperature difference between the filler and the conductors is measured in a sample length of similarly loaded cable, and added to the first measurement. The copper wires 5 embedded in the cable 1 form a resistance thermometer connected in one arm of a bridge circuit, with compensating leads 9 in the other arm, so that the out-of-balance voltage developed in the coil 11 of the indicator depends on the temperature of the filler. Some of the strands of the cores of the sample cable 13 are replaced by high resistance wire and connected in series to a current transformed 18 round one of the cores of the main cable so that the sample is loaded to the same watts/foot as the main cable. Two thermocouples 20, 21 placed respectively at the centre of the sample, and on the surface of one of the conductors are connected in series opposition to the second coil 19 of the indicator.
