Apparatus for measuring the moisture content of material comprises a portable assembly having two probes for insertion into the material, the resistance between the probes determining the rate of flashing of a neon lamp. The resistance R (Fig. 1) of the test material is in the charging circuit of a capacitor 4, and the neon lamp 2 is in parallel with the capacitor. The apparatus comprises two encapsulated units, the first 9 (Fig. 3) comprising three 30 V batteries 1 connected in series between plugs 6, and the second 10 (Fig. 4) comprising two mating sockets 7 between which are connected two probes 3, and the capacitor 4 is parallel with the neon lamp 2, which is visible through a transparent window.
