Abstract

888,138. Low-temperature seal. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Oct. 27, 1960 [Nov. 3, 1959], No. 37273/59. Classes 122 (1), 122 (3) and 122 (5). [Also in Group XXXII] A sealing device for use at low temperatures comprises a resilient V-section sealing member 10, e.g. of rubber or P.T.F.E., provided between its limbs with a V-section bimetallic spring 13 arranged to urge the member 10 towards a sealing portion with a force which increases with decreasing temperature. The spring 13 is made from a length of strip material formed of a plurality of integral V-shaped portions 14, the strip being bent along or adjacent its longitudinal centre line to form the V-section The strip component 18 in contact with the limbs 11, 12 has a coefficient of expansion greater than that of the component 17 so that, as the temperature decreases, the spring bows and exerts a greater force on the lips.
