A textile calender or like machine having two outer rolls 1, 2 and two inner rolls 3, 4 disposed therebetween, the inner rolls being adjustable in the peripheral direction of the outer rolls and arranged to act as working rolls defining a working gap for the material 6 to be treated, is characterized in that the inner rolls are arranged to be driven by friction by the outer rolls, the latter being driven in opposite directions, and in that the gap between the outer rolls is smaller than the sum of the diameters of the inner rolls so that the frictional drive from the outer rolls to the inner rolls tends to move the inner rolls closer to the gap between the outer rolls. As illustrated the rolls 3, 4 are journalled in slots 7, 8 in arms 9, 10 mounted on journals 11, 12 of rolls 1, 2. The arms 9, 10 are connected by links 13, 14 on both sides of the frame 17 to a common yoke 15 connected to rod 16 resiliently loaded by spring 19 so that the rolls 3, 4 are held resiliently in a position close to the gap of outer rolls 1, 2. Consequently the rolls 3, 4 can further approach the narrowest gap between rolls 1, 2 if the web 6 has a thin part and conversely can yield in the direction of the running web 6 if a relatively thick part should enter the gap 5. Either or both of the rolls 1, 2 may be resiliently mounted and a third outer roll may be provided above roll 1 or below roll 2 with a second pair of inner rolls 3, 4 to provide a second passage for the material to be treated.
