Abstract

Aliphatic alcohols, substantially free from the corresponding ethers, are produced by contacting an aliphatic halide at elevated temperature in a reactor with water and the corresponding hydrogen halide, separating the aliphatic alcohol produced from aqueous hydrogen halide, and recycling aqueous hydrogen halide to the reactor. Suitable aliphatic halides are, for example, n-butyl bromide, 1-bromo-octane, allyl chloride, allyl bromide, crotyl chloride, crotyl bromide and 3-bromo-butene-1. The concentration of hydrogen halide in the reaction mixture is preferably maintained at 10%-30% by weight.
