Abstract
Vinyl chloride is prepared by passing a mixture of acetylene and hydrogen chloride over a catalyst comprising mercurous chloride and free from mercuric chloride, preferably in comminuted form and supported on a carrier, e.g. charcoal, porous clay, active carbon, silica gel or pumice. In the examples, a gaseous mixture of acetylene and hydrogen chloride is passed over such a catalyst contained in a tubular reactor immersed in a heated liquid bath. The catalyst is prepared by: (1) reducing mercuric chloride with dextrose, suspending the resulting mercurous chloride in water, stirring with granular charcoal and subsequently drying; (2) impregnating charcoal with mercuric chloride and reducing with a solution of sodium dicarbonate, dextrose and magnesium chloride in situ; (3) impregnating granular activated carbon with mercuric chloride and reducing with sulphur dioxide in situ. Other reducing agents which may be used include ammonium sulphite and formic acid. The catalyst may also be prepared by first impregnating the carrier with mercurous nitrate and then with a chloride solution, or by impregnating with mercury followed by chlorination with chlorine or hydrogen chloride, the reaction may also be carried out at pressures higher or lower than atmospheric.
