Abstract

1,140,657. Vinyl chloride. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 17 July, 1967 [19 Aug., 1966], No. 32747/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division B1] Vinyl chloride is obtained by the oxychlorination of ethylene using a catalyst comprising (a) a chloride of copper; (b) an alkali metal chloride; (c) zinc chloride; and (d) at least one chloride of a lanthanide, supported on a porous carrier, e.g. α-alumina with a surface area less than 5 m2/g. and a pore volume of 0À20 ml/g. The catalyst, which may be used as such or which may be introduced in the form of salts readily convertable to the chlorides in situ, may be in the form of a fluidized bed, a fixed bed or a bed carried along with the gas stream. The catalyst may be activated before use by treatment with a gas mixture of oxygen or air and hydrogen chloride and/or chlorine. 1,2-Dichloroethane may also be produced in the oxychlorination process.
