887,571. Loud-speakers. VAN HEDEL, A. A. W. J. Nov. 10, 1959, No. 38135/59. Class 40 (4). A loud-speaker assembly comprising two loud-speakers 17, 18 has a reflecting surface 4 in the form of part of an ellipsoid, the centres of radiation of the loud-speakers 17, 18 lying on a line passing through the focus F1 of the ellipse formed by an intersection of the ellipsoid with one of its principal planes, and lying at the foci F 1 <SP>1</SP>, F 2 <SP>1</SP> of the ellipse formed by the intersection with the ellipsoid of the plane perpendicular to the principal axis through F 1 . As shown, the reflecting surface 4 has a base member 5 carrying the loud-speakers, the whole being mounted on a baffle 1, so that the focus F 2 complementary to F 1 lies just outside the aperture 2 in the baffle. The reflected waves tend to converge on a line parallel to F 1 <SP>1</SP>, F 2 <SP>1</SP> through F 2 with lateral inversion of the images of the two speakers. The ellipsoidal portion of the reflector terminates at the plane through F 1 <SP>1</SP>, F 2 <SP>1</SP>, F 2 , the portion between this plane and the baffle being plane. Thus the form of the base member 5 is that of half an ellipse together with a rectangle. A further wall 21 and a further aperture 22 in the baffle board may be provided for sound emerging from the rear of the loudspeakers. The speakers may be of the moving- coil type and may or may not have different frequency characteristics. Specification 719,969 is referred to.
