Abstract

A foaming agent for the manufacture of cellular concrete comprises a mixture of a wetting agent and a polymannuronic acid. The wetting agent may be the sodium salt of an alkylnaphthalenesulphonic acid in which the alkyl groups are C4-10 hydrocarbon chains, and the polymannuronic acid preferably has a molecular weight of at least 1500 and a viscosity of 100-120 c.p. in 1% solution. The mixture may also comprise (a) a C10-18 fatty acid salt e.g. a palmitate, or aluminium, barium, potassium, magnesium, strontium or zinc stearate, (b) a polyacrylic acid ester, and (c) a silicic acid-containing mineral or aluminium silicate compound, e.g. felspar, mica or talc. As described in the example, the concrete is made by (1) mixing the foaming agent with water, (2) adding cement with mixing, (3) adding sand thereto, and optionally (4) adding slaked lime. Slaked lime can be used instead of cement in stage (2), in which case stage (4) is omitted or cement added in this stage.
