Abstract
A plaster or mortar which sets to a porous mass comprises a coarse filler, a hydraulic binding agent, and an inorganic gel producing a satisfactory adherence of the granules of the filler, the mixture being substantially free from enclosed gas bubbles. More gel than hydraulic binder is employed, the two being just sufficient to fill the cavities between the filler particles. The gel should be substantially completely dehydrated by the time the binder begins to set. The filler may be crushed pumice stone, blast furnace slag, or refuse combustion slag. The gel may be a metal silicate or metal hydroxide, e.g. magnesium silicate, aluminium hydroxide, or a coloured metal hydroxide. The hydraulic binder may be blast furnace cement, or Portland cement with or without lime, hydraulic lime, Roman cement, ground blast furnace slag, diatomaceous earth, or trass, Softeners such as wood flour, glue or glycerol, hardening agents such as barium chloride, magnesium silicofluoride, or sodium silicate, hard fillers such as crushed basalt or carborundum, or preservatives such as arsenic, copper, or zinc compounds, sodium fluoride, salicylic acid or phenol derivatives may also be added.
