886,762. Toothed gearing; securing gearwheels to shafts. WALLGREN, A. G. F. April 23, 1958, No. 12873/58. Classes 80 (1) and 80 (2). In order to equalize the load transmitted by two intermediate shafts 30, 31 in helical reduction gearing between shafts 14, 24, both the intermediate shafts and one or other of the driving and driven shafts, or the gear thereon, is free to move axially and each of the two parts 20 or 22 of a double helical pinion on the driving shaft 14 is engaged by a single helical gear 36 or 44 on the respective intermediate shaft. The two intermediate shafts also carry double helical pinions 48-50 engaging a double helical gear 54 on the driven shaft 24. The shaft 24 is held against axial movement by a thrustbearing 26, the shafts 30, 31 being free to move axially to equalize the load taken by the two pinion parts 48, 50. The gear casing includes a partition 12 serving to support the intermediate and driven shafts, the single helical gears 36, 44 being on overhanging end portions of their shafts. The double helical pinion 20-22 and its co-operating gears have a small tooth angleless than half that of the gear 54- in order to reduce the axial forces in the gearing. The pinion 20-22 comprises two single helical pinions of opposite hand which instead of being keyed to the shaft 14 have end-face clutch couplings with each other and with a sleeve keyed to the shaft. The shaft 14 is supported by a bearing in the partition 12. The two sets of teeth of the pinion 20-22 may have slightly different inclinations so as to produce an axial force on the shaft 24 which will prevent any tendency for play in the bearing 26, or may have different tooth numbers so that the gears on the shafts 30, 31 are not identical. The driving and driven shafts 14 may be coaxial or may be slightly eccentric, the gear pairs 20-36 and 22-44 then differing. The gear-wheels may be of nodular cast iron.
