In a step-up or step-down gear drive from a driving shaft to a coaxial driven shaft through a plurality of concentrically arranged countershafts, the gear-wheels of each countershaft are separately supported to be rigid against bending and connected for torsion by an elastic shaft. As shown, countershaft gears 2, 3 meshing with input and output gears 1, 4 are separately supported in bearings 8, 9, 10, 11 and coupled by an elastic shaft 5 for the transmission of torque.
