Abstract

Driving gear for a ship comprises one or more I.C. engines 1 driving an output shaft 10 through a reduction gearing 6, 9, in a gear casing 21, each input pinion 6 being driven by an engine driven shaft 3, passing through the pinion, and a slippery clutch, e.g. electromagnetic or hydraulic, located outside the gear casing 21 on the side remote from the engine 1, a bearing 12 outside the casing 21 supporting the passing port 5 of the clutch and its driving-shaft 3. In Fig.1 the bearing 12 is carried by the driven clutch member 8 and the pinion 6 is supported in bearings 19, 20. In Fig.3 the end of the shaft 3 is supported in a separate pedestal bearing 13 and the driven clutch member is connected to the pinion 6 by a cardan hypoid tooth coupling 16.
