[Also in Group XXX] In a friction driven winding apparatus, the slip of the hauling cable is detected and compensated for by a magnetic tape device. Thus, the Lilly controller of the winch drum drives a magnetic tape which carries a signal thereon (e.g. a magnetic peak flux). When the winder conveyance stops at a predetermined level, the tape at the same time stops with the signal thereon positioned in front of two stationary magnetic pick-ups A, B, so that normally the windings F 1 , F 2 of amplidyne AM receive equal impulses and the output of the amplidyne being the difference of the sizes of the impulses does not influence motor M. However, if with the conveyance positioned at this level the signal on the tape is out-of-level with the two pickups, due to cable slip, the impulses received by the two windings will be unequal and the amplidyne output will operate motor M. The motor M acting through a differential LB (not shown) will compensatingly adjust the Lilly controller to bring it into correspondence with the position of the conveyance. As shown, the contactors BC, BC<SP>1</SP> are closed when the winder conveyance reaches the said level and the contactors BIS, BIS<SP>1</SP> are closed when the winder brakes are applied and the amplidyne is then operated. This occurs thus only when the conveyance is stationary. The magnetic tape may be replaced by a film coated with a sensitive emulsion so as to operate optically. Specification 2684/58 is referred to.
