Abstract

1368524 Position control systems INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 9 Oct 1972 [11 Nov 1971] 46465/72 Heading G4H A system for controlling the position of a device such as a document 17 comprises a motor 3 for moving the device, a brake 9 for stopping the device, a counter 27 having a capacity equal to the number of distance increments between a sensing location and a desired stopping location SP for the device, a source 15 which generates a signal for each increment moved by the device and a sensor 19 at the sensing location for initiating the supply of the signals to the counter which supplies an output to the brake when the counter is full. The motor drives a belt 11 via pulleys 5, 13 and rotates the signal generator 15 which may be a magnetic or photo-electric device. When the leading edge of the document passes the photo-electric sensor 19 a gate 25 is enabled and supplies the signals from the generator 15 to the counter. When the counter is full it supplies an output signal to a control 29 which applies the brake and brings the document to rest at the location SP. A system is also described for accurately aligning a line on a paper with a line on a film. The control systems enable positioning errors due to deviations in the distance moved by documents during braking and accelerating to be corrected.
