Abstract
1463101 Automatic control systems INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 16 May 1974 [10 Aug 1973] 21725/74 Heading G3R A system parameter is sampled and if "valid" i.e. within an acceptable range, is stored and used to control the sensed parameter. If however this parameter is "invalid" i.e. not within the acceptable range, due to a fault the sensed parameter is controlled according to the most recent stored, prior "valid" signals. In the embodiment, the parameter e.g. temperature or motor speed is sampled aperiodically and compared with the acceptable range which depends upon the interval between samples and upon a second sensed process parameter. As shown, the speed of D.C. motor 40 driving a magnetic tape capstan is measured by a tachometer 43 whose speed dependent period T between adjacent pulses is compared with a desired value Tr, to form a speed error signal. If this error falls within the acceptable range #Tr i.e. is "valid" the motor speed is controlled using the error. If however the error is "invalid" e.g. due to a temporary failure of the sensor, the motor speed is controlled by the last "valid" error as stored in hold network 55. The speed error is used to modify a speed command signal from network 56, so as to control the acceleration, constant speed or deceleration of the motor.
