Feb. 12, 1958 [Feb. 12, 1957; Feb. 15, 1957; April 11, 1957; July 1, 1957; Dec. 17, 1957], No. 4635/58. Class 35. [Also in Group XVIII] A timepiece has an electromagnetically maintained pendulum 100, Fig. 1, having a stirrup 103, the rod 104 of which carries a permanent magnet 105 which moves into and out of two inductively-coupled coils 107, 108, connected as shown to a transistor 109. The relative movement between the magnet and the coils causes the circuit to generate bursts of pulses and so maintain the pendulum in oscillation. Instead of the coils 107, 108 being wound one upon the other auxiliary coupling coils 115, 116, Fig. 4, may be used. The mechanical oscillator may comprise a bar magnet 117, Fig. 5, suspended between two springs 120, 121, the latter of which carries a resilient pawl 123 which drives a ratchet wheel 124 connected to a cam 125 which actuates a switch 126 in the circuit of slave clocks 127, 128. The springs 120, 121 may be replaced by permanent magnets. In another example, Fig. 8, a bar magnet carried by a balance co-operates with coils 151, 152 and a damping circuit comprising a transistor 164 and coils 162, 163 is provided.
