Abstract

886,194. Plate heat-exchangers; heat storing apparatus; refrigerating. WARRINGTON TUBE CO. Ltd. April 13, 1959 [Sept. 22, 1958], No. 30217/58. Classes 29, 64(2) and 64(3) A flat unit for heat absorption or emission, e.g. for use in freezing, evaporating or condensing, is formed by joining together, as by welding 2, rectangular-sectioned tubes 1 (four whole tubes are indicated in Fig. 2 but each tube may be replaced by a group of tubes) which communicate at alternate ends so that heat transfer medium such as refrigerant flows through the unit in a sinuous path. There may be alternate passages 7, Fig. 8, sealed at each end by a plate which bears a screw plug 8 and contains a eutectic solution to slow down changes in temperature of the plate, e.g. by storing heat. In Fig. 8, communication between the tubes 1 for the heat transfer medium is provided by end covers 9 which seal the unit and contain partitions 10. The cover 9 at one end is shown before sealing to the unit. Similar covers, with the partitions 10 spaced apart at a distance equal to two widths of a tube 1, may be used in an embodiment, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), in which there are merely passages for heat transfer medium, i.e. there are no sealed passages 7. Figs. 1 and 2 also show a unit having no eutectic solution but the edges of the unit are sealed by simple strips 4, intercommunication between tubes 1 being by means of alternate cut-away portions 3, Fig. 2. A similar arrangement of cut-away portions is used in an embodiment, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) in which there are sealed passages for eutectic solution. Leakage at the cut-away portions is prevented by welding, brazing or soldering.
