[Also in Division F4] A heat exchanger, suitable for use as an acid-resistant evaporator, comprises one or more blocks of fluid-tight carbon in which are formed tubular ducts 3 and slot-like ducts 4 which are open at the periphery of the blocks along their entire ength. The heat exchanger may be used or the distillation of hydrogen chloride gas rom hydrochloric acid, Liquid to be evaporated enters at 16 and rises in ducts 3. A heatng fluid (e.g. steam) lows in the same direcion or in counter curent through the slotike ducts 4. The liquid n ducts 3 evaporates, and the vapour passes out through opening 7. Three blocks are assembled in a comnon casing 1 between end plates 1a, 1b held n place by rods 1c. the tubular ducts intercommunicate through chambers bounded by the facing end faces of adjacent blocks and packing rings 10. The slot-like ducts intercommunicate through a cylindrical space 5 and may have sills, formed integrally with the blocks, to allow any condensate from the heating fluid to drip off away from the heat exchange surfaces. A heat-exchanger is described, with reference to Fig. 5 (not shown), which may be used for the condensation of vapours of hydrochloric acid.
