Abstract
886,115. Valves. DOMINION ENGINEERING WORKS Ltd. Dec. 8, 1959 [Sept. 5, 1959], No. 41697/59. Class 135. A combined shut-off and control valve comprises a casing 5 having inlet and outlet ports 6, 7, an oscillating shut-off valve 12 arranged in one position with its discharge passage 16 axially aligned with both ports and in another position to close off the inlet port 6, means 42, 43, 46 to seal the oscillating valve in both positions, and a control valve 13 mounted for reciprocable movement in the discharge opening 16 to open and close the latter. As shown, the oscillating valve 12 has a part-spherical closure surface 14 and is mounted in trunnions 18 so as to permit rotation from the open position shown to the closed position under the action of a piston-and-cylinder arrangement 19, 20. The control valve 13 is mounted in a spider 17 integral with the oscillating valve and is arranged to be reciprocated by a gear-and-screw arrangement 30, 31, 32, 41 through a hand wheel 34. The oscillating valve is provided with two rings 42, 43 for sealing the open and closed positions respectively and are both arranged to co-operate with a sealing ring 46 urged into contact with one or other of the latter rings by an eccentric cam device 47, 48, 49. When the oscillating valve is in the closed position the control valve may be completely removed for repair or replacement after a cover plate 9 has been removed from the casing; a coupling 36 is provided for disconnecting the hand wheel shaft 35 from the gearing before rotation of the oscillating valve. The control valve may be replaced by a sleeve (Fig. 4, not shown) in order to permit free flow through the valve.
