798,641. Valves. SCHONEBECKER BRUNNENFILTER GES. Nov. 17, 1954 [Nov. 28, 1953; Feb. 11, 1954], No. 33346/54. Class 135. A valve has a sealing element constituted by two part-cylindrical members having their longitudinal edges spaced apart, the element being capable of radial movement within the valve housing and having a radius of curvature greater than that of a bore of the housing so that when the valve is in the closed position fluid under pressure is in direct contact with that part of the element communicating with the outlet side of the valve whereby it is pressed against its seating to form a complete seal. Figs. 1 and 3 show a rotary cylindrical valve having a ported bush 2 divided by a longitudinal cut 14 and having ports 5, 6 which can be aligned with openings 7, 8. The valve is operated by a rotary shaft 16 carrying a plate 15. A cross-bar 21 of rectangular section loosely engages slots in the plate and bush respectively. Fig. 4 shows a piston or gate valve comprising two part-cylindrical members 36, 361 embracing a reduced part 42 of a piston having an upper part 44 connected to a non- rotatable threaded spindle 53 and a lower part 45 with a through port 46 co-operable with inlet and outlet ports 37, 38. The spindle 53 is operated by a non-rising nut 55 and a hand wheel 54. The ends of the piston are open to the atmosphere and sealed with respect to the cylindrical surface 39 by ring gaskets 47, 48 backed by bush-like washers 51, 52. Rotation of the members 36, 36<SP>1</SP> relative to the piston is prevented by screws 43.
