[Also in Group XXI] A pipe coupling for connecting two pipes having peripheral flanges with their rear faces inclined to the pipe axes comprises a plurality of sections 1 arranged or adapted to be arranged end to end to form a substantially continuous circlet to embrace the peripheral flanges of two pipes to be connected by the coupling, the sections being of a channel form adapted to straddle the pipe flanges and urge same axially together upon radial inwards movement of the sections towards the pipe axes and having out turned lip 5 to support encircling bands 6 such band co-acting with means for adjusting their effective circumference thereby to adjust the circumference of the circlet of sections. In the construction shown the out turned lips are constituted by hollow beads in which the band which are of wire are threaded. The adjusting means comprises a T-bolt 7 having a head 8, connected to one end of each of the bands and a T-piece 13 having a head 14, connected to the other end of each band. The T-piece has a slotted stem to receive the stem of the T-bolt and the latter has an adjusting nut 12 and a cupped washer 11 to be held by the nut over the end of the T-piece stem to retain the T-bolt stem in the slot of the T-piece stem. Each of the heads is provided with a pair of grooves for receiving the ends of the bands, a sleeve 9 being used to secure the band in the grooves and the end of the wire band being formed into a hook to prevent withdrawal of the wire end through the sleeve. In a modification the adjusting means consist of pairs of cross pieces having grooves to receive loops in the ends of the band wires in the same manner as above described and these cross pieces have transverse bores through which the shank of a bolt is passed the cross pieces being urged towards each other by a nut. In a further construction a T-bolt is used which engages a slot in a trunnion lug which is connected to the other end of the wire. Instead of using separate adjusting means the band can be endless and can be deformed by means which form bights of variable size in the band. Toggle type adjusting means can also be used.
