Abstract

[Also in Group XXVIII] A clamping ring for connecting together in coaxial alignment two externally peripherallyflanged members e.g. pipes, hoses or the like, comprises a plurality of sections 2-5 which except for the end sections 2, 3 are connected together in end to end relationship so that the clamping ring is flexible in a plane through the ring perpendicular to its axis but substantially inflexible transversely of this plane, and fastening means 11, 12 for connecting the two end sections and for drawing them together to tighten the clamping ring around the flanges, the fastening means comprising a nut 11 swivelably mounted on one of the end section 2, a screw-threaded bolt 12 screwing into the nut 11 so as to swivel with it and having its headend 15 adapted to be engaged in the other end section 3 of the clamping ring, which section has an open ended slot 20 to receive the head end of the bolt, the bolt having on the inner end of its head or on a part positioned adjacent to the head, a bearing surface 17 adapted to engage and seat in a recessed seating 18 provided in the slotted end section adjacent to the slot at the side remote from the other end section, the bearing surface and the seating being shaped so that the head end of the bolt has a universal or ball joint type of engagement with the slotted end section so as to permit angular adjustment of the bolt with respect to the end sections as the clamping ring is tightened or released. As shown four sections are used pivoted together end to end and each section is channel-shaped with tapering side walls so that a wedging action is exerted on the flanges when the bolt is tightened. Both the bearing surface 17 and seating 18 are part-spherical in shape and a cup-like washer 22 is positioned between them this washer being connected by a chain 24 to one of the flanged members to be connected so that the coupling cannot be lost. The two flanges which are joined by the coupling are intended to have a rubber sealing ring positioned between them in facing grooves which is compressed when the coupling is tightened.
