Abstract

884,559. Pipe couplings. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 4, 1959 [Sept. 9, 1958], No. 28943/58. Class 99(1). An arrangement for coupling two pipes comprises two collars 1, 2 Figs. 1, 2, attached respectively to the ends of the two pipes 3, 4, an abutting face 13 on each of the collars, ribs 5 spaced symmetrically about the periphery of each collar and projecting respectively beyond the abutting face of the corresponding collar, and a surface 8 on each rib inclined at an angle to the corresponding abutting face. The arrangement is such that when the two abutting faces are placed together the ends of the ribs on each collar are located in the recesses between the ribs on the opposite collar and the inclined surfaces form opposite discontinuous sides of a groove extending around the collars. A flexible longitudinally extensible locking member 9 is adapted to encircle the two sets of ribs and to lie in the groove and abut against the inclined surfaces so as to force them apart thus forcing the abutting surfaces together, when its contracts in length. A sealing washer 14 maybe located in grooves in the abutting surfaces 13. The locking members 9 may be a continuous or non-continuous coiled steel spring with or without surrounding short lengths of tubing or a plurality of rigid members joined together by extensible members so as to form a continuous extensible member.
