777,859. Pipe joints. MITCHELL, R. J., and ALLIED ART INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 20, 1956 [Oct 20, 1954; Jan. 5, 1955], Nos. 30138/54 and 283/55. Class 99(1) In a joint for pipes of polyethylene, copper, steel or aluminium a pair of sleeves 2, 4 is mounted on and retained at or near the end of each pipe 1, the internal sleeves 4 having an external taper and the external sleeves 2 being provided with a co-operating and opposite internal taper. Means are provided for bringing and holding the sleeves 2 together so as to compress a sealing member 7 disposed between the opposing end faces of the sleeves 4 or the ends of the pipes, or both. As shown in Fig. 1, the outer sleeve on one pipe constitutes a coupling body which is in screw-threaded engagement with a coupling member 6 coacting with the outer sleeve of the other pipe ; alternatively coupling members adapted to be screwed together are mounted on the sleeves 2, or the latter have flanges engaged by rings which are bolted or screwed together; a quick-acting coupling device may be used. The sealing ring is of rubber, metal and rubber or nylon, polyethylene or silicone rubber. The internal sleeves 4, Fig. 4, may have serrated external surfaces or annular flanges 8, or both, and the ring 7, Fig. 8 may be substantially U-shaped in crosssection, constructed of copper, steel or hard rubber, and held between the inclined faces 9 of the sleeves 4.
