Abstract

The surfaces of a body of halogenated polyethylene is provided with a thin layer of metal oxide by cathode sputtering before coating it or joining it to another material. Thus a body of P.T.F.E. or polychlorotrifluoroethylene may be coated with an oxide of copper, indium, bismuth, zinc, iron, cobalt or nickel by reactive sputtering of the metal in oxygen or by direct sputtering of the oxide, before a coating of metal such as copper, silver, gold or aluminium or of dielectric is applied by vacuum p evaporation, or before the body is joined to another material using a layer of adhesive. The process is applicable to the production of capacitors.
