Abstract

884,641. Pipe joints. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAASCHAPPIJ N.V. Sept. 8, 1960 [Sept. 10, 1959], No. 30978/60. Class 99(1). In a joint between a synthetic plastic tube 4 and a synthetic plastic or metal surface or flange 1, the tube has a conically deformed end secured in a conical slot 3 provided in the surface or flange and having a width substantially equal to the tube wall thickness. The tube which may be made of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride or polystyrene, may be softened by heating, e.g. in oil, and pressed into the slot and after cooling it is secured by the retained shape. An adhesive may be applied to the joint surfaces and a resilient sealing ring 5 may be fitted in the bottom of the slot 3.
